96 Chevy Cavalier z24 manual shift cable?

Could be a bad clutch or pressure plate. I would have him get under it and look for movement in the slave cylinder when you push the clutch in. If he hears some unusual noises from the clutch area when you push in on the pedal, then you know the clutch is damaged. You really need to get up under the vehicle to troubleshoot this.
