My computer screen is black?

Turned on my Dell laptop this morning and screen is almost black. Very faintly I can see what is trying to show me on start up but hardly enough to read. Adjusting the brightness doesn't do a thing. What could be causing this? Is it something I can fix myself? Sound is there though.
