Sharp periodic pain behind right ribs?

For the past several months, my husband has been getting periodic attacks of sharp pain behind his lower right ribs. The pain usually lasts about an hour. He describes it as being steady rather than throbbing. Pressing on the area causes the pain to intensify only very faintly. He has found that stretching it helps a little, but not much. What could be causing this?
